The Race the State Buys, the Sprint the Promoter Sells, and the Night the Model Could Not See

Singapore does not host a Grand Prix to make money on tourists — the arithmetic has never worked (roughly S$129m a year of incremental tourism receipts against a ~S$135–140m annual organising cost), and everyone involved knows it. The state buys branding and business gravity, not gate receipts. Which is exactly why this weekend happened: the first-ever Singapore Sprint turned a one-night spectacle into a two-race, four-session weekend — a commercial injection into the format, on a circuit that overtakes badly and in a season where only one practice hour was allowed. On track, the weekend produced a driver result of real historical weight and a model failure of a new, self-inflicted kind.

How it was won

From pole, lights-to-flag. Verstappen converted P1 into a controlled win — his first Singapore Grand Prix victory, at the one circuit on the calendar he had never won. It was Red Bull's second consecutive win (R16 Bahrain-in-Malaysia → R17 Singapore) and completes a run of three strong rounds (Baku 2–3, Bahrain 1–5, Singapore 1). The race was decided on Saturday, not Sunday. The pivotal act was the Sprint, run in mixed wet/dry conditions: Verstappen won it while Russell crashed out from the lead, and the grid penalty that followed put Russell P19 for the GP. The 8-point Sprint win plus a clean GP gave Verstappen a 33-point weekend; Russell's weekend yielded 2. Marina Bay's historical chaos never arrived. Unusually for Singapore there was no full safety-car period (only VSC/yellows), so track position held and the front ran essentially to form — which is exactly the condition under which a from-pole winner is least likely to be shuffled.

Championship

Antonelli 340 — Russell 238 = 102 points. The gap is now large enough that Antonelli can be crowned at R18 (United States GP, Austin) if he wins and leaves COTA 125 points clear of both Russell and Hamilton (BBC). Verstappen to 4th (221). Back-to-back wins lifted him past Leclerc (215) and within 8 of Hamilton (229); Hadjar added P10 (1 pt). Constructors: Mercedes 578 · Ferrari 444 · McLaren 339 · Red Bull 332 · Racing Bulls 100. Ferrari out-scored Red Bull 39–34 this round. Full standings: 2026 Season.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the Drivers' Championship on 340 (102 pts clear of George Russell). Top three: Andrea Kimi Antonelli 340, George Russell 238, Lewis Hamilton 229. Big mover: Max Verstappen 6→4. Constructors: Mercedes 578 ahead of Ferrari 444. Verified · source: Jolpica standings after Round 17.

How we scored it
Team-level hit

Our top team was Mercedes; our top driver pick was George Russell (36.5%). The winner’s team, Red Bull Racing, was inside our top three — scored as a hit. The driver top-1 surface is the fragile one we disclose. Misses are logged in the Corrections Log.
