The Grand Prix That Split Its Name From Its Venue, and the Works Engine That Finally Won
A Formula 1 round is usually one thing: one sovereign, one city, one circuit, one name. The 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix broke that cleanly in two — Bahrain kept the name, the title sponsorship and every dollar of proceeds; Malaysia supplied the venue, Sepang, hosting an F1 race for the first time since 2017. On that borrowed stage, Max Verstappen won from pole for the first time in 2026, and in doing so handed the works Red Bull Ford Powertrains its maiden victory — the exact confluence our run-in hypothesis was betting on, and the race our model missed for the first time all season.

Verstappen won from pole by 2.307s — his and Red Bull's first win of 2026 and the maiden win for the works Red Bull Ford Powertrains; F1's first race at Sepang in nine years. A rain-delayed, chaotic start: Verstappen fell behind the Mercedes pair off the line before recovering to control it from the front. Russell retired ~5 laps from the end while running P3 with a power-unit failure, handing Red Bull a constructor win Mercedes had led all weekend (Red Bull 35 pts, Ferrari 27, Mercedes 18). Podium: Verstappen, Antonelli, Hamilton. Hadjar P5 from P8 after a five-place ICE grid penalty.
