The Prestige Bid That Finally Got Its Thriller
Azerbaijan pays the single highest hosting fee on the Formula 1 calendar to buy nation-branding — a petrostate's prestige bid — and for most of its ten-year history the race it got back was forgettable. This weekend it delivered the season's most dramatic race by every measure that matters to a host: a 0.196-second finish, two safety cars, seven retirements, and a champion-elect forced to salvage a points finish from a Q1 crash. On top of that volatility, the season's *underlying* structure held unchanged — Mercedes won again (11 of 15), Antonelli's lead ticked down to 66 — but one headline broke through: George Russell won for the first time since late June, and the champion-elect made his first costly error of the season in the same weekend.

Russell won from pole by 0.196s over Verstappen — the smallest margin of the season — his 3rd win of 2026 and first since Austria (R8). Two safety cars decided it: Albon's lap-31 crash at turn 4 erased Russell's ~12s lead; a lap-38 restart melee (Colapinto locking up into teammate Gasly and collecting Norris) brought the second. Champion-elect Antonelli crashed in Q1, started P16 and climbed to P5 with the aid of the two safety cars. Hadjar took P3 for a Red Bull 2–3 — the team's strongest collective result of 2026. Seven retirements; Bottas crashed on the final lap.
