A New City, an Old Pattern, and the Economics of a Debut
Madrid bought its way back onto the Formula 1 calendar at a record European price, debuted the sport's first genuinely new circuit since Las Vegas (2023), and the weekend delivered the sport's new dominant pattern — a Mercedes win, an Italian heir extending a championship lead, and a model-vs-market disagreement the market has now won twice running. The debut was a commercial success by every metric that matters to a host; on track, it repeated rather than changed the season's script. It was also, by the drivers' own account, the dullest race of the season — a sold-out event wrapped around a circuit almost nobody could pass on, and a layout the venue has already committed to changing for 2027.

Antonelli converted P2 to his 8th win of 2026, and the race was decided off-track — by VSC timing, not by an on-track pass. Lap 12: Stroll's brake failure brought out the Virtual Safety Car. Mercedes pitted Antonelli (with Verstappen and Russell) cheaply under it, while pole-sitter Norris was caught out and a slow stop cost him the net lead — Antonelli did not need to overtake him on track. Leclerc declined to box under the VSC, gambling on a later Safety Car that never came; he was forced to pit on lap 48 and surrendered the lead. Hamilton retired on lap 6 (brakes); Perez (lap 31) and Sainz (lap 43) also stopped. Antonelli won from Verstappen and Norris — his 8th win of the season and Mercedes' 10th.
