The State Cut Itself a Better Deal
Hungary underwrites an annual hosting fee estimated at ~$40m — but negotiated the extension on a trade: commit to a full circuit redevelopment, and take a royalty discount in return. The discount is worth HUF 107bn (~$339m / €277m) through 2032, against a rebuild that came in at HUF 78.9bn (~€204m). The saving exceeds the build. That is a state writing a better cheque than it spends — and the clearest illustration yet that a hosting fee is a negotiable line item, not a fixed cost. On track, Lando Norris won McLaren's first race of 2026.

Norris took pole — ending Mercedes' run of ten consecutive poles — but teammate Piastri passed him and led the early stages, and McLaren declined to swap the two on a circuit where following closely is hard. The strategy chess between the McLarens decided it: Norris asked to pit first, McLaren refused and stopped Piastri on lap 33, leaving Norris in clean air on a longer, faster stint — he ran quicker than his teammate on older tyres and regained the lead on lap 46. Lap 55: Piastri's gearbox failed, bringing a VSC. Norris, Hamilton and Leclerc took fresh tyres, while Verstappen stayed out to gain second. Norris controlled the restart to win by 15.080s, from Verstappen and Antonelli — McLaren's and Norris's first win of 2026. Hamilton crossed the line fourth but a five-second pit-lane speeding penalty (0.1 km/h over the limit) dropped him behind Leclerc to fifth.
